Ice cube trays are not just for ice cubes any more!

284 Ice cube trays are a perfect serving method for giving a large variety of healthy finger foods for little ones. They may not eat everything you give them, but they will likely eat far more than they would if you just put it all in a bowl & said, "Here's a healthy lunch. Now eat your salad!" My daycare children love when I do this one.

Here are some ideas for bite-sized finger foods to include for the children:

  • Fruit such as blueberries, raspberries, cut up strawberries, apples, grapes, oranges, bananas
  • Vegetables such as carrots, celery, cucumber, cooked yellow or green beans
  • Small crackers, or pieces of bread
  • Cereal such as Rice Crispies, Shreddies, and Cheerios
  • Cut up cheese (eg. mozzarella, cheddar, even Cheese Strings)
  • Meat - cut up wieners, chicken, turkey
  • Seeds, nuts, beans - Chickpeas (garbonzo beans), sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds, peanuts, walnuts, cashews
  • Raisins
NOTE: I would not give raw cucumber or carrots, popcorn, nuts or uncut grapes to young children as they can be a chocking hazard. You know the child in your care best, but use caution in giving foods to young ones that may pose a chocking risk. Wieners should not be cut in round circles as they are the perfect shape to block a child's airway. Always cut in half again. You may not be able to serve nuts or other items mentioned if any of the children have allergies. Have you tried this idea with your children? What items would you suggest?facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmail
